Wordless Wednesday: Me & the Field Mice

Checking my bag. I caught something.

A prairie vole, Microtus ochrogaster (my study animal).

Palpating the vole to see if she is pregnant. Depending on how far along she is, I'll have to release her back in the field.
A Deer Mouse, Peromyscus (not my study animal).

Releasing the mouse back to the field. Click on picture to enlarge.

I caught a Least weasel, Mustela nivalis, too. Definitely NOT my study animal. They prey on other two guys above. After hissing at me, and baring scary teeth, he released himself back into the field. LOL!
Don't let the size or cuteness fool you. This is the world's smallest carnivore, and all Mustelid.

More pictures of my field site here and here.

If only writing the dissertation were as much fun as this part. But I've got 7,766 words for Chapter 2 and I have prelimanary results for Chapters 3 & 4. Writing continues.

The weasel is REALLY cute. Not sure what that says about me...good luck dissertating!

I have to say, I just love these pics. It's kind of silly for me to say this, but the simple fact is that I so rarely see photos of African American women doing research (or even recreation) in nature.

So that's a least weasel, eh? I remember reading about that species as a kid, but I never knew they were so small!

I see you had the gloves on part of the time and off part of the time. The gloves appeared to be on when the weasel was around (smile)!

Great photo series. Thanks also for visiting my WW-entry this week.

MG: oh, no they are the cutest. It says nothing but great things about you - and me! haha

Nice catch Villager.

I actually hate wearing gloves when I do biology. It takes away my dexterity and control. I even dissect animals bare-handed - it's probably a great thing I didn't go into medicine - veterinary or human, because the gloved really interfere.

I handle mice to frequently that I can just grab them. Even if they bite, it's usually not a big deal. What you don't see is me wearing the leather gloves when I actually hold the weasel. I have to find those pictures and san them in.

BoC: thanks. You should check out OutdoorAfro.com and JoyTripProject.com Two websites I recently discovered when I was folloing the Breaking the Color Barrier in the Great American Outdoor Conference. Two great outdoor recreationists.

Wow girl! I hope those are Kevlar gloves!

Amazing that you got a weasel. I have only seen the large varieties while out hiking in the winter. For some reason never notice them in the summer.

I am impressed that you can both blog regularly and write a dissertation.

Happy WW!

Great finds! I just found your blog. How cool that you go searching out bits of nature surrounded by concrete!
